Scope and Content Gravestone commemorating Thomas Rutherford, Nesbit churchyard, Scottish Borders This gravestone commemorates Thomas Rutherford, a resident of northesbit, who died in 1743. Finely executed, this evocative winged skull on the back of Thomas' memorial signifies death. Above is a ribbon inscribed 'MOMENTO MORI' (Remember You Must Die) exhorting us to consider our own mortality, a motto commonly found with death emblems. The graveyards of Scotland are an important part of the cultural heritage of the country and can provide fascinating information for people interested in family or local history, as well as vernacular art.
