Scope and Content Dean Bridge, Dean, Edinburgh The Dean Bridge, the principal bridge over the Water of Leith, was built by Thomas Telford 1829-31, and is one of his finest achievements. It carries the road from the west end of Edinburgh towards Queensferry over the deep ravine of the river. The bridge, one of the highest in the world when it was built, has a total length of 136m, and is made up of four segmental arches, each with a span of 29m, carrying the road 32m above the river bed. The parapets were heightened in 1912. The bridge was originally proposed by, and eventually built for, Lord Provost John Learmonth who wanted easy access to his property, the estate of Dean on the north side of the river which he bought in 1825, with a view to its development for housing.
