Scope and Content Leading light, Torry, Aberdeen This is one of a pair of leading lights at Torry, on the south side of Aberdeen Harbour, both apparently made of cast iron, with raised lines to suggest masonry construction. This view shows the higher of the two lights, on the seaward side. The raised joint lines can be seen towards the base. Th fixed ladder gave access to the lantern for maintaining the lamp. This the most sophisticated pair of leading lights in Scotland, the quality of their design and consrtuction reflecting the status of Aberdeen as a port. Vessels entering the port used these lights to steer s straight course into the harbour. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
