Scope and Content Glenisla School Bridge, Angus This is an unusual and early suspension bridge, with a combination of cable staying and suspension members. It is all made of forged wrought-iron, by John Justice of Dundee, apart from the timber deck. This view shows the bridge from the south west, with rough rubble abutments. Note the iron rod backstays to brace the pylons. There are also diagonal stays supporting the deck, and the chains which form the side railings also help to carry the deck. This was one of the first suspension bridges in Scotland, and may have been the first outside the Borders. Features of its unusual design are also to be found in bridges at Crathie and at Haughs of Drimmie, near Blairgowrie. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
