Date 6/8/1976

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 494361

Scope and Content Pitcon Brickworks, Dalry, Ayrshire This was one of three common-brick works in the vicinity of Dalry which were built to make pressed-clay bricks from the coal-measure clays - blaes - deposited as waste during coal and ironstone mining in the 19th century. This view shows the single 26-chamber Hoffman regenerative kiln at this works, with the stumpy chimney which provided draught. The clay preparation and brick pressing were carried out in the buildings on the right. As this works was built in 1939 it seems likely that it was intended to satisfy wartime demand for bricks for defence works. The works closed in 1990 and was speedily demolished.
