Scope and Content Torphichen Preceptory, West Lothian Torphichen Preceptory was the only Scottish seat of the Knights Hospitaller. The first church was founded in the 12th century, and the tower and transepts date to this period, though altered in the 14th and 15th centuries. During the Reformation much of the complex was razed. The 12th-century nave served as the local kirk until 1756 when the present kirk was built on its site. The roof-raggle of the domestic range can still be seen on the gable of the north transept. A hospital or hospice would have existed at Torphichen Preceptory. Herbs were cultivated by the Brothers as food and for medicines. In 1548 the acting Preceptor wrote about the 22 herbs growing at Torphichen in a book called 'The Complaynt of Scotland'. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
