Scope and Content Memorial to HMS Hampshire, World War I and II Naval Cemetery, Lyness, Hoy, Orkney Islands Originally created during the Great War, the Naval Cemetery at Lyness is a formal tribute to the memory of Royal Navy personnel who died in both World Wars. Dedicated especially to those who lost their lives as a result of local naval tragedies involving HMS Hampshire (1916), HMS Vanguard (1917) and HMS Royal Oak (1939), it also records losses at the Battle of Jutland (1916), to which the Grand Fleet had sailed out of Scapa Flow. This memorial to the officers and men of HMS Hampshire takes the form of a ringed and interlaced Celtic high cross. The 11,000-ton cruiser was sunk off Marwick Head on 5 June 1916 with the loss of all but 12 of her company, including the Minister of War, Lord Kitchener, who was heading for Russia to confer with the Tsar's government. The tragedy was also commemorated, through locally raised funds, in the erection in 1924 of a memorial tower on Marwick Head. At the heart of the Orkney archipelago, Scapa Flow was the main fleet anchorage for the Royal Navy during both World Wars. Its vital importance led to the creation of one of the most concentrated defence networks in Britain. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
