Scope and Content St Michael's Bridge, Dumfries, Dumfriesshire This bridge was built to relieve growing congestion on the 'New Bridge' of 1793, which had been widened in 1893. It is a four-span reinforced concrete structure, faced with red sandstone, with medallions above the triangular cutwaters. This view shows the bridge from the north east, with the chimneys of Rosefield and Troqueer mills in the background. Note that the bridge deck slopes up from left to right. Considerable care was taken in the design of this bridge to make it harmonise with the medieval Devorgilla's Bridge and with the New Bridge. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
