Scope and Content Edinburgh Castle and the City of Edinburgh Edinburgh Castle lies at the heart of the City. Though it still houses some garrison, it is one of the most popular tourist sites of Edinburgh. It lies perched high on the Castle Rock and was built over many years from the 12th century to the present day. To the north of the Castle lies Princes Street, separated by gardens where once lay a loch, the Nor' Loch, drained in the 18th century. The main railway lines through the city may be seen channeled down one side of the gardens. Princes Street Gardens are very popular and a temporary marquee may be seen over the band stand for the summer concerts. Up by the Castle, on the esplanade, the seating is being built for the Military Tattoo, one of Edinburgh's biggest summer shows. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
