Tarff, Waulk Mill General view from WNW

SC 449801

Description Tarff, Waulk Mill General view from WNW

Date 27/8/1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 449801

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Waulk Mill, Kirkcowan, Wigtownshire Like the nearby Tarff Mills, this was a small rural woollen mill, in this case an 18th century foundation, the building seen here being enlarged in 1821 and in 1835. This mill was water powered, but weaving sheds added in the 1880s were steam powered. This view shows the layout of the mill, with the spinning mill immediately to the left of the chimney, and the 1880s weaving sheds further left. This mill continued to work until the 1960s, latterly in the hands of the Cree Mills Co of Newton Stewart. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
