Scope and Content Scatsta Airfield, Shetland Luftwaffe aerial photograph of Scatsta airfield and Sullom Voe seaplane base, taken during World War II. Now engulfed by the Sullom Voe oil terminal, the seaplane base was established to allow flying boats to patrol the seas from Norway to Iceland. Nearby Scatsta airfield was built as a fighter station to defend Shetland. The German Luftwaffe took aerial photographs of parts of Scotland throughout World War II. The photographs were used for intelligence work, such as selecting targets, assessing bombing accuracy and finding equipment and defensive positions. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
