Montrose, New Bridge View from N, Downstream

SC 444558

Description Montrose, New Bridge View from N, Downstream

Date 1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 444558

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Montrose Bridge, Angus This bridge was built to resemble in profile its predecessor, a notable early suspension bridge. It is, however, a reinforced-concrete cantilever bridge, designed by Sir E Owen Williams. This view shows the bridge from the south east. The two double cantilevers have a short suspended span between them. This bridge belongs to the period in the 1920s and 30s when reinforced concrete was a comparative novelty, and designers were experimenting with different forms.
