Scope and Content Dysart Harbour, Fife Dysart was an important commercial harbour from the 17th century, and was improved in 1831 by the construction of a small wet dock for coal shipment. After it was superseded as a port it became a minor fishing harbour, and is now a small boat haven. This view shows the outer basin, formed by two breakwater piers, at least partly of 17th century construction. The central jetty on the right divides the basin into two at its inner end, and the entrance to the wet dock is on the right. As can be seen, the harbour dries out at low tide, restricting its utility. The building of the wet dock was an attempt to get over this disadvantage for vessels of medium size, by the standards of the early 19th century. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
