Scope and Content Union Bridge, Hutton, Berwickshire This was the first large suspension bridge in Britain. It was designed by Captain Samuel Brown, and employed his patent design of wrought-iron chains. The bridge spans the river Tweed where it forms the boundary between Scotland and England. This view shows the bridge from the Scottish end, with the massive masonry pylon. The bridge was strengthened in 1902-3 by adding a wire rope on each side, above the original triple chains, as can be seen here. The pylon at the south side end is, unusually, set back from the end of the span. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
