Scope and Content St Anthony's Chapel, Holyrood Park, City of Edinburgh The ruins of St Anthony's Chapel stand on a spur overlooking the city. The date of its foundation is obscure, but by 1426 the building needed repairs and a letter from the Pope records that money was sent for this and for new vestments for the priest. The chapel lay in the part of the Park that belonged to Kelso Abbey and it was a popular place of pilgrimage. It had fallen out of use by 1581, though it remains one of the most visited and romantic spots of the Park. Popular tradition asserts that there was a hermitage associated with the chapel. Recent excavations examined masonry remains close by, but suggested that these relate to a storehouse. Traces of burials were also found here. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
