Scope and Content Preaching ark from old Edderton Parish Church Edderton Parish Church, Edderton, Highland was built in 1743, presumably replacing an earlier church on the same site. The former Edderton Parish Church passed to the estate on the building of a new Parish Church prior to 1843. In 1843 it was regarded as derelict and the Balnagown Estate permitted the Free Church to use it, which they did until the 1980s. The Free Church never actually had title to the building which is now in the hands of a local trust. This preaching ark, or canopied pulpit, was used for outdoor services. The Free Church of Scotland was created as a result of the Great Disruption of 1843 when nearly a third of the Church of Scotland's ministers left to form a separate church.
