Scope and Content View of interior of ballroom at Mar Lodge, Aberdeenshire Just west of Braemar, the Mar Lodge estate was originally owned by the medieval Earls of Mar. Parts of the estate were sold off in the 18th century, and the present estate was bought by The northational Trust for Scotland in 1995. This is the interior of the ballroom built for the use of the ghillies and estate staff. Timber-framed, this building was built in 1883, but re-erected on its present site in 1898. The numerous antlers on the ceiling are from deer hunted on the estate. In the late 19th century, buildings like this, which were intended solely for the staff had to be located outwith the main house. The ballroom has also been used as a cinema, a sports hall and as part of a ski school for the Cairngorms. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
