Scope and Content Pre-restoration view of parapet of Dunstaffnage Castle, at the mouth of Loch Etive, Argyll Because of its strategic position, Dunstaffnage Castle was a government base during both Jacobite Rebellions. Flora MacDonald was briefly held there in 1746 after she was arrested for helping Prince Charles Edward Stewart (Bonnie Prince Charlie, Prince Charles Edward Stuart) escape after the Battle of Culloden. The parapet was raised by 30 to 60cm during the 17th-century. Gutter-slabs provided drainage. These acted as water-spouts, directing the run-off away from the wall. Shortly after this picture was taken, the parapet was restored to its original level. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
