Scope and Content Dunstaffnage Castle across Dunstaffnage Bay showing mouth of Loch Etive, Argyll Dunstaffnage Castle was built before 1275 by the MacDougall lords of Lorn and taken from them by Robert Bruce after a battle and a siege around 1309. The first Campbell Earl of Argyll became custodian in 1321-2. This shows the natural harbour of Dunstaffnage Bay, and two important sea-ways guarded by the castle: the mouth of Loch Etive (right) which penetrates deep into Lorn; and, beyond the entrance, the Firth of Lorn. The castle also guards the Sound of Mull. Until well into the 18th century, Argyll's sea-lanes were more strategically important than its roads. Most trade went by boat, and it was easier to sail on the sea lochs than to march through the mountainous interior where armies were easily ambushed. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
