Scope and Content View of byre at Boloquoy steading, Sanday, Orkney Boloquoy is a working farm, and well-maintained. The farm possesses the last working fixed barn threshing machine on Orkney as well as a thatched barn. Taken prior to repairs in 1996 this almost-profile view shows the structure of the turf-roofed byre at Boloquoy. Built of drystone walling, the byre has a roofing of flagstones with a layer of turf and wire mesh on top with stones to weight the mesh down. The Scottish Farm Buildings Survey, a partnership between the Royal Commission and National Museums of Scotland, seeks to compile records of those farm buildings of historic interest. Field survey, backed up by documentary research, began in 1993. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
