Scope and Content Locking-bar and padlock of bonded ware-house at Port Charlotte, Argyll Like most bonded ware-houses, the one at Port Charlotte was built to be secure. Since 1823 it has been legal to store whisky 'in bond' without paying duty on it until its sale. Security measures prevent both from theft and from attempts to evade the duty. This door is typical of mid 19th-century bonded-warehouses, being stoutly built and fitted with a two-covered, or 'double-shrouded', padlock. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
