Scope and Content Fort at Ness of Garth, Sandness, West Mainland, Shetland The remains of this fort can be seen at Ness of Garth, Sandness. The site was originally a promontory, but it has been so eroded by the Atlantic that during high tide it is now cut-off from the mainland. Little of the fort itself now remains. This is a view showing the location of the fort. There were four lines of ramparts, of which the outermost is now only a line of boulders. Inside the defences are the remains of oval houses, now little more than hollows. These are to the W side. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
