Scope and Content Morning Room, Craigcrook Castle, Craigcrook Road, Edinburgh The morning room of Craigcrook Castle was reconstructed in 1815 from the 16th-century hall which originally occupied the whole area of the first floor of the house. The room was photographed in 1927 by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The room, with elegant consoled doorcases, has late 17th-century style ceiling enrichment and a swagged frieze on the bowed east wall. The mural in the alcove, in the style of Watteau, was painted in 1835 by the Scottish artist, David Roberts. The room was remodelled for Lord Jeffrey, the Scottish judge and literary critic, when Craigcrook became his country residence in 1815. Here, until his death in 1850, he entertained politicians and authors, including Lord Cockburn and Sir Walter Scott. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
