Scope and Content Boloquoy Steading and Mill, Sanday, Orkney Islands, from south-east This early to mid-19th-century farm complex with its meal mill and parallel byre range are significant survivors of a working farm. In 1996 when this photograph was taken, Boloquoy housed the last working, oil-powered threshing machine on Sanday. This view shows the steading and mill from the south-east, with the mill on the far left by the sea. A modern garage is situated to the left of the main farm buildings and the long range to the right of the farmhouse comprises a pig house, threshing barn, two byres, turnip house (now byre) and tractor shed. In 1996 Boloquoy was a working farm using traditional methods and growing oats. Oats were always the dominant crop in Orkney and even after improvements through the 19th century and into the 20th century, they retained their status, though increasingly they were grown as animal fodder rather than for human consumption.
