Scope and Content At North Kessock, a village of some sort probably existed as long ago as 1437, but it grew in the C19 when Sir William Fettes built a pier for the ferry to Inverness. Charlestown was laid out by the Mackenzies of Kilcoy. The west pier (shown in the photo) was built to be nearer to the hotel and a ferry operated to South Kessock in Inverness till the Kessock Bridge opened in 1982. The last ferry – the ‘Rosehaugh’ – was moved to serve the Corran ferry near Fort William. The pier has been taken over by a community trust (2011) and is being upgraded.
