Scope and Content Nave, Dunblane Cathedral, Dunblane, Stirling, looking north-east towards the choir Dunblane Cathedral, a Gothic cathedral begun c.1238, was added to and altered a number of times before suffering damage in the 16th century during the Reformation. The building was completely restored by the renowned Scottish architect, Sir Robert Rowand Anderson, between 1889 and 1893. The architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, was commissioned to photograph the interior in 1895. The nave, dating from c.1240, has pillars with clustered shafts supporting the pointed arches of the side aisles. The canopied pulpit (left), huge lectern with its accompanying flight of steps, and the elaborately carved choir screen were all installed by Anderson, who also pierced the north wall of the choir for an organ chamber. Sir Robert Rowand Anderson (1834-1921) was born in Edinburgh, and became one of Scotland's leading architects at the end of the 19th century. He worked in many styles from Gothic to Classical, and his celebrated public buildings include the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, McEwan Hall and University Medical School in Edinburgh.
