FRIGATE

A small- to medium-sized warship built around steam or gas turbine propulsion and carrying a range of weaponry, and carrying a helicopter for anti-submarine operations. Vessels of this type are now distinguished from Destroyers by not having a long-range (area defence) anti-aircraft missile system, Warships of this type have traditionally tended to operate as part of larger formations rather than independently, being similar to Destroyers in this respect.
