Archaeology Notes

NY38SE 16 3646 8450 removed to 3648 8447.

For burgh of Langholm, see NY38SE 36.

Langholm market cross is mentioned in 1723-4. It stood in front of the Town Hall until about 1840 when a statue of Sir Pultney Malcolm was erected on its site (shown at NY 3646 8450 on OS 25" 1857, though later moved). The shaft was discovered during road improvements about 1867, and later the top-stone, into which a rough stone cross has been cut, was found in the nearby Blacksyke. The re-assembled cross was set up in the grounds of Greenbank (NY 363 847).

J and R Hyslop 1912

The cross now stands at NY 3648 8447 on the lawn at the rear of the Town Hall (NY38SE 40). It was moved to its present position from Greenbank in 1968 when the house became a residential home (The Matron, Greenbank, Langholm). It is labelled "Mercat Cross" and comprises a 1.1m high shaft with a 0.2m square base which is set in a 0.7m diameter, 0.3m thick stone (this may be a mill- stone). The top stone is an unworked boulder which is 0.3m across with a crude inscribed cross in its top.

Surveyed at 1/2500.

The statue of Sir Pulteney Malcolm has been moved and re-erected near the cross at NY 3648 8446.

Visited by OS (MJF) 26 September 1979.
