A moss- and grass-grown concrete floor of what was presumably a small building is situated in dense deciduous scrub woodland about 3.5m ESE of Retort House South (NY26SW 38.12) and 19m WNW of the Mixed Acid Storage Tanks (NY26SW 38.33). It appears to be rectangular on plan and measures about 6m from WNW to ESE by 3m transversely. The S side is trimmed with bricks up to 0.12m in thickness and 0.1m in height. There are the remains of a white ceramic waste pipe close to the floor’s most visible edge.
The building, whose function is uncertain, is shown on the plan of the works (MMW 1919, plan) given in the report by the Ministry of Munitions of War outlining the processes in-volved in the manufacture of the cordite propellant during the First World War at H.M. Fac-tory, Gretna (Site 3).
This building fell into lot 507, which was offered for sale by auction on 22-5 July 1924 (HM Treasury 1924, 101). The lot was bought by Messrs James Jackson & Co Ltd, St Vincent Street, Glasgow (Carlisle City Archives, DX 2040/3). After its removal from the site, only the foundations were left in place. These are readily visible on an aerial photograph (M124/13 04117) flown on 19 August 1940, which also suggests that it may have had a porch close to its SE corner.
