This building is situated 10m SE of the Joiners Shop (NY26NW 91.17) and 2m SW of the standard gauge railway line leading to Explosives Magazine R4 (NY26NW 46.12). It is rectangular on plan and measures 6.35m from WNW to ESE by 2.8m transversely within brick walls 0.35m in thickness and 2.2m in height. It has a flat, overhanging reinforced cast concrete roof set at a slight gradient and a central doorway protected on the SSW elevation by a brick baffle. This doorway leads into a central corridor providing access to a WNW and ESE compartment. Both retain a central circular vent and concrete flooring throughout the building. The interior has been whitewashed. The brickwork of the NNW end wall has been broken through to provide additional ventilation for sheep and their lambs.
This shelter was one of a number that still survive (NY26NW 46.2, NY26NW 46.3, NY26NW 46.5, NY26NW 46.6, NY26NW 46.7, NY26NW 46.8, NY26NW 46.13) which were associated with the narrow-gauge railway system (NY26NW 46.27). Aerial photographs indicate that they were introduced between 19 August 1940 (M/124/13 04134) and 13 October 1942 (CAM/061 6211).
