Nothing is now visible of four guardhouses (NY 27727 64649, NY 27127 64252, NY 26207 64050, NY 25678 64470) that were located along the Solway coast about 5m S of the Security Fencing (NY26NW 46.20) that surrounded HM Factory Gretna (Site 3) during the First World War.

An undated plan (SUPP 10-39) held by the National archives at Kew, identifies these with the letters ‘G.H.’, explained in the key as a Guard House. They were rectangular on plan and measured about 8m by 5m transversely. What may be a fifth guardhouse (NY 24511 64847), which is not identified as such on the plan and appears to be double in size, is also faintly visible on a contemporary official ground-based photograph (MUN 5-297 pt5, 717) taken after construction and also held at Kew.

Visited by HES Heritage Recording (MMD and ATW), 22 May 2022.
