The Second World War network had its origin in that of the First World War Factory and in the pre-existing rural road system (2nd edition Ordnance Survey 6-inch map (Dumfriesshire, 1900, sheet LXIII: SW)). Aerial photographs (M124/13 04115-04123), flown on the 19 August 1940, show that additions had already been made following the decision to re-requisition the land for the new munitions Depot in 1938-9. An earlier rural road that led S from Loaninghead (NY 250836 66129) beyond the Security Fence (NY26NW 46.11), via the former site of Hills Cottage (NY 26073 65070), to Loch (NY 26411 63896), was recommissioned as far as the crossroads S of the Office W Lines building (NY26SE 16.07). A new gate was introduced where this breached the Security Fence (NY26NW 46.11). Beyond the Office W Lines building, the road continued as a track to Loch. A later aerial photograph (CAM/031 6209-12) flown on 13 October 1942 shows only temporary tracks and desire lines.
