Archaeology Notes

(NY 21906651) Supposed site of Battle (NR) (16th Century)

OS 6" map (1900).

See also NY26NW 2.

About two miles from Annan, and a few hundred yards to the north of the Carlisle road, there stood, until a few years ago a rude sort of monument erected in memory of the Scots who fell in a battle which took place there, and in which the English were routed with heavy losses. A now-indecipherable gravestone in the nearby churchyard of Dornock (see Dumfries 63 SW 1) marks the burial place of three of the English leaders.

New Statistical Account (NSA) 1841 (J Monilaws)

A collection of implements of war was found when the farmhouse of Battlefield was built. Here a battle is traditionally said to have been fought in the 16th century.

Name Book 1858

No further information was found about the battle and enquiries at Battlefield Farm proved negative.

Visited by OS (WDJ) 28 February 1963.
