(NY 1492 7954) Mall's Castle (NR)
OS 6" map (1957)
Remains of a circular entrenchment; seen from the air, June 1939.
Information from O G S Crawford 1939.
'Mall's Castle' is mentioned in passing by Roy when discussing places on the Roman road (RR 7f) from Carlisle to Lockerbie.
W Roy 1793; Name Book 1857
Situated just below the crest of the ridge, and levelled slightly into the slope is a near circular enclosure. It measures internally 60.0m N-S by 56.0m within an earth-and-stone bank up to 1.5m high where best preserved in the N. On the E, this bank has been reduced by ploughing to a small scarp. No definite entrance is visible. Although the interior has been cultivated, the situation and construction of this enclosure indicates a settlement - possibly scooped.
Surveyed at 1:2500.
Visited by OS (RD) 21 June 1966 and (DWR) 22 February 1973.
Scheduled as 'Malls Castle, settlment 320m W of Mallscastle... a scooped settlement of mid- to late-Iron Age date, situated on a gently sloping hillside above the valley of the Water of Milk, 320m WNW of Mallscastle Farm.'
Information from Historic Scotland, scheduling document dated 8 February 2008.
