(NX 9287 7399) Tregallan Mote (NAT)

Earthwork (NR)

OS 6" map (1969)

An earthwork (R W Feachem 1956) which Coles (1893) thought was a possible motte but which J Williams and G Anderson (1971) say is almost certainly not medieval and is likely to be Iron Age, comparable with NX97SW 10. The site consists of a slight eminence, oblong and lying E-W, bearing, at the E end, the remains of a ditch, 12' wide with a slight external rampart. The circuit of the ditch round the hillock was almost complete in the late 1870's.

RCAHMS 1914

Dense vegetation hampers investigation and precludes positive classification, but this is certainly not a motte. The ditch is still traceable on the S, having an average depth of 0.6m and a width of 6.0m - 7.0m.

Visited by OS (DWR) 21 November 1973.
