Archaeology Notes

NX97SE 2.01 9775 7467

(NX 9775 7467) The chapel (dedicated to St Mary) of the Castle of Dumfries (at Castledykes) is referred to in early 13th century documents.

J Barbour 1907

It was in use until the Reformation, (A E Truckell and J Williams 1967) and is mentioned as standing in the early 18th century. The well-preserved patch of walling located N of the flagstaff during excavations in 1953, may represent an outbuilding of this chapel.

A E Truckell 1955

Medieval pottery from Castledykes Chapel site is in Dumfries Museum.

A E Truckell 1964.
