(NX 9098 7968) Martyrs' Tomb (NAT)

OS 6" map (1969)

Two Covenanters, Edward Gordon from Galloway and Alexander M'Cubbin from Glencairn were hanged near here on March 3rd 1685 by order of Grierson of Lagg and buried at this spot. The grave was enclosed in 1832, when a new gravestone was put alongside the old one, which lies prostrate, and the inscription (fully quoted by the RCAHMS and by Thomson) giving details of the event transferred to it.

RCAHMS 1914; J H Thomson [undated].

Both the modern memorial stone and the old inscribed stone, lying flat on the ground, are enclosed by an iron railing. The inscribed stone gives the information supplied above.

Visited by OS (WDJ) 30 June 1964.
