This reservoir is of elongated but irregular form, and extends across parts of the parishes of Parton, Balmaghie and Crossmichael. It has been formed by the construction of Glenlochar Barrage (NX76SW 40) to dam the River Dee (also known as the Water of Ken), and forms a major element of Stage I of the Galloway Hydro-Electric Scheme.
