Archaeology Notes

NX74NW 91 7427 4871.

The importance of this earlier 19th century cottage lies in the re-used 15th or 16th century carved stones of the fireplace. Single storey row of cottages partly used as steading; rubble walling, slate roofs. easternmost cottage has chimney piece constructed of reused cut stones of late medieval origin.

Jambs have moulded caps and shafts. The lintel is formed from a carved grave-slab on which is incised a double-edged sword of the type found in Dundrennan Abbey.

SDD list, 1971.

A grave-slab, engraved with a full length knight's sword, forms the fireplace lintel in High Barend Cottage. Reputed to be from Dundrennan Abbey. (NX74NW 12.)

The grave-slab was removed from the cottage and returned to Dundrennan Abbey (NX74NW 12) prior to renovations.
