OS 6" map (1957)

Barscobe Castle or Barscobe House is a typical house of a country laird, built in 1648 (date given on a panel above the entrance) on the L-plan. The main block is three storeys high with the stair wing one storey higher. The gables have a modification of crowsteps found only in Galloway. It was unoccupied in 1965. It has a modern byre attached.

D MacGibbon and T Ross 1889; RCAHMS 1914, visited 1911; N Tranter 1965

Barscobe Castle is a fine example of a mid-17th century house which was tastefully restored in 1971. The byre has been converted into a garage. (Information from Miss D'Oyly Carte, Barscobe Castle)

Visited by OS (JP) 28 May 1975.
