Archaeology Notes

NX65NE 67 6999 5828 to 6736 5500. RR 8.

See NX65NW 144 and NX65NE 42.

Formerly RX 23.

The Roman road from Glenlochar (NX76SW 2) to Loch Ryan via Gatehouse of Fleet is thought to follow the same track as the Old Military Road, which runs from the Bridge of Sark to Portpatrick (MR 23, see NX65NE 42).

Rickson, responsible for building the Old Military Road, informs us that he opened up a new northerly line from Ringford (NX 6886 5782) to Gatehouse (NX 595 571, see NX55NE 24) via Irelandton Moor (NX 6355 5512, see NX 65NW 144) (Anderson 1968).

A D Anderson 1968; A Wilson 1989.
