This extensive reservoir has been formed by damming the River Dee or Black Water of Dee, and crosses the boundary between the parishes of Minnigaff and Kells. It forms a major element of stage I of the Galloway Hydro-Electric Scheme, supplying water through the Glenlee tunnel (NX57NE 37) to Glenlee Power Station (NX68SW 68).
This reservoir is noted by Hill as 'the only man-made loch in the Galloway sheme'.
