Archaeology Notes

See also NX45NW 45.

(Area NX 423 580) Within the building of the wall which bounds on the W. the road to Wigtown from Penninghame, and about 1/2m N of Glenturk is a standing stone. It is pointed to its upper end, and measures 5 5" in height above ground. Within the field, some 35' to the westwards, stands a pointed boulder 3'6" in height, with another similar boulder lying displaced beside it. These stones are possibly the remains of a stone circle. There is said to have been in former times a croft here called 'Croft an Righ'.

RCAHMS 1912

The only stone which resembles a standing stone conforming approximately to the description given by RCAHMS, is built into the wall at NX 4238 5758. No other stones were located and this would appear to be a very doubtful antiquity. Croft an Righ is shown at NX 4362 5561 (OS 1:1056 plan of 1848 in Wigtown Pavilion).

Surveyed at 1/2500.
