Archaeology Notes

NX44SW 56.23 4449 4028

(23) Headstone. The slab has a flat top and pointed base; both sides are damaged. It was found built into a byre at Boghouse at the same time as No.22.

On the front are two crosses incised in outline with deeply cut lines of V-section. The upper cross has a wedge-shaped head and arms and a long slightly swollen shaft. The lower cross has fout unequal wedge-shaped arms, the shaft noticeably smaller than the head. On the back is a cross similar to that first described, but with a plain shaft; it is set obliquely to the axis of the slab.

The irregular design of the crosses and the swollen shaft are very late features, which could well belong to the 12th century, the date indicated on historical grounds.

Radford and Donaldson 1953b, 43.
