OS 6" map (1957)

This crannog (No: 4 on sketch plan attached to NX44NW 2), was situated about 60 yds from NX44NW 3, and nearer to a rocky projection on the S margin of the loch. It was examined by Lord Percy in 1863 and found to be smaller than the former, and its layers not so distinctly marked. Finds made were a stake with two holes bored in it about the size of a finger, a thin piece of wood in which mortises had been cut, and a box, rudely cut out of a block of wood. Its interior was 6" cubed, and it had a ledge for a cover, but it has since gone to pieces.

This crannog was further excavated in 1884, when a wooden vessel was found, measuring externally 21" by 16" by 10 1/2", and 10" by 10" by 8" internally.

This site was pointed out by a farmer at Stonehouse farm. There is nothing to be seen, but probing in the area revealed an almost solid stone layer beneath the grassy surface.

Visited by OS (WDJ) 20 August 1970

Carved rectangular box with lid. Attributed to the Romano-British or Dark Age periods, and held in the National Museum of Scotland.
