(NX 2323 5509) Tree Island, so called by Wilson as it had been planted, is a crannog. It measures 70' x 50' and rises 10' above the summer level of Whitefield Loch. It is crowned by an old cairn, covered with moss 6" - 8" deep. Wilson notes beams of wood at the SW and to the N of the island. It has not been excavated.
G Wilson 1873; RCAHMS 1912, visited 1911
This crannog, no longer an island, is a natural mound with an artificial spread of stones 20.0m NE-SW by 10.0m transversely upon it. It is covered with trees and undergrowth; no wooden beams are evident.
Resurveyed at 1:2500.
Visited by OS (BS) 28 June 1976.
