Archaeology Notes

NX19NE 16 c. 182 981

For Girvan harbour, see NX19NE 75.00.

This 'forte of eartht' is referred to in an English 16th century report as extant, and the possibility of attacking it and subsequently garrisonning it with one or two hundred men is mentioned.

R B Armstrong 1884.

There was a 'fort of earth' near the mouth of the Girvan Water.

J Smith 1895.

No information on this earthwork was found and both sides of the Girvan Water are built up or under golf courses, ornamental gardens, etc.

Visited by OS (RDL) 7 February 1963.
