Archaeology Notes

NX15NW 89.03 11275 59569,11884 59121 and 11850 59106

The fuel depot is situated on the S perimeter of the airfield at two locations one adjacent to a building annotated 'Pennyliggit' on the OS 1:2500 scale digital map and a second about 800m NW.

The remains of filling stations, a pit measuring about 40ft by 27ft, now filled with rubbish, where the fuel tanks were once situated and a vehicle fuel tank still in situ. An identical concrete area is found at NX 11275 59565.

Both fuel storage areas are visible on vertical air photographs (106G/Scot/ UK 41, 3312-3313, flown 4 May 1946).
