Archaeology Notes

NX14SW 7 1125 4074.

The farmhouse of Killumpha (see also NX14SW 6) is built on the site of the 'old circular fort of earth and stone' from which Fort Hill derives its name. (Called "Castle Hill" in 1957). This place is more likely to have been an old graveyard (from the name Killumpha).

Name Book 1848; OS 6" map (1957)

Killumpha is called Killumquhy in 1545 and 1594; the saint appears to be Imchad of Cell Drochat in the Airds of Ulster.

W J Watson 1926

There is no trace of any feature described above and no further information was obtained.

Visited by OS (DWR) 27 January 1972

The Name Book suggests that the farmhouse at Killumpha (NX14SW 6) occupies the site of a 'circular fort of earth or stone'. Nothing is now visible of this enclosure, but there is no reason to believe that it was a burial-ground (see Watson 1926 for the derivation of the name).

Name Book 1848; RCAHMS 1985, visited (SH) July 1984
