Archaeology Notes

NX08SE 34 08747 81810

Oblique aerial photographs (RCAHMSAP 1995) have revealed the cropmarks of a four poster stone-circle, a round barrow, possible ring-ditches, several pits and cropmarks, approximately 500m S of Ballantrae Bridge (NX08SE 25). The four poster stone-circle (NX c.0874 8178) measures about 10m by 8m. Immediately to the N is a round barrow (NX c.0874 8180), measuring about 10m in diameter, and immediately to the E a possible ring-ditch. Approximately 50m to the ESE a large pit is visible (NX c.0878 8175), about 20m in diameter with a small ring-ditch on the SE side. An area of several pits is situated 50m to the NNE (NX c.0880 8179).

This is the site of eight standing stones, with only two now remaining in situ in a nearby garden (see NX08SE 1). Other areas with various cropmarks are situated nearby (see NX08SE 32, NX08SE 33, NX08SE 35, NX08SE 36 ).
